Isandlwana Lodge was designed to appear as though it grew out of Nyoni Rock, the actual rock on which Ntshingwayo the commander of the Zulu force stood and directed the iconic victory of the battle of Isandlwana. 22 January 1879.
In true Zululand fashion, the entire lodge is shaped like a shield and built with rock and thatch to resemble the native’s kraals. The columns that support the roof are from the old West Street Pier in Durban, and each is named after a Zulu commander or significant person in the chain of command during the Anglo-Zulu War. The lodge is built into the Nyoni mountain side where the commander of the Zulu force stood and directed the battle.
Throughout the lodge, details great and small pay homage to the battle of Isandlwana January 22, 1879. On 24 May 1999, the lodge was formally opened by Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, a direct descendant of King Shaka. The lodge has been operational for 27 years.
Isandlwana has hosted notable guests from across the world, including royalty and dignitaries globally including key figures from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, Holland, Hungary, Ireland, Norway, Russia, Slovenia, South America, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand and the United States – and, of course, South Africa.
President Jimmy Carter, King Zwelethini, and many other notable royal family members from Europe have resided at Isandlwana Lodge. The iconic Authors Mr Ian Knight, Katie Birbeck are regular guest and residents since inception.
Consisting of 14 executive suites with all rooms all appointed to the highest level and direct views over the Isandlwana battlefield. The furniture fittings and fixtures are all custom made with the highest quality and locally sourced. All the rooms vanities and bathroom details have been a bespoke design as shield shape, from the naming of each room to a Zulu hero, to the finest details of door locks.
